Thai Ridgebacks are medium-large sized short-haired dogs of high intelligence and great jumping ability. Males measure 22 to 24 ½ inches at the withers and weigh from 42 to 60 pounds: female measure 21 to 23 ½ inches and weigh from 37 to 50 pounds.

Thai Ridgebacks are a medium-sized dog, and are very muscular in appearance. The body is usually tapered, and the breed has high-set ears that are triangular in shape. The dogs have a very short coat that is hard and straight.

Thai Ridgebacks are an intelligent and obedient breed. Due to isolation and lack of human contact, the Thai Ridgeback remains an independent and largely undomesticated breed.

Thai Ridgeback Originally came from the island of Pho Quoc, that belonged to Siam, and later became a part of Vietnam.

Thai Ridgebacks have strong, firm backs covered with hair. They also have a loose-skinned, muscular body. The name Ridgeback comes from a ridge on its back, formed by hair growing in opposite directions, thus creating whorls and circles.

The Chinese Chongqing Dog is a rare breed of dog native with the Chongqing town of China, somewhat like a bulldog-Thai ridgeback combination (not, however, descended from both of these) but with a unique tail, color, and coat.

If you want a guard dog I would recommend the Akita Inu, Thai Ridgeback, Doberman, or German Shepherd Dog. Because you would be using it as a guard dog it would be your responsibility to still socialize it well.

Others claim that the Shar-Pei is somehow related to the Thai Ridgeback. But the true history of the dog is difficult to investigate due to the loss of the breeding records when China became communist.

The "ridge" that runs along their back is a raised strip of stiff hair that grows in the opposite direction from the rest of the coat. It occurs in only a few other dog breeds, such as the Thai Ridgeback and the Vietnamese Phu Quoc dog.

The UKC has classified them as a pariah dog, a class which includes other primitive breeds such as the Basenji of Africa and the Thai Ridgeback. The type designations "pariah" and "primitive" are commonly used interchangeably in cynology.
