History: Brave and majestic, the Tosa Inu came from a land devoted to the breed's strength and ability to fight to the death without so much as a whimper. They were only developed after 1854, when Commodore Perry visited Japan.

Developed in 19th century Japan, the Tosa (also called the Tosa Inu and the Japanese Mastiff) derived from a cross between the large, Spitz-like Shikoku dogs of Japan and several large European breeds including the Mastiff and the Bulldog.

Tagged as the "sumo wrestler of the dog world", its other names are Japanese Mastiff, Tosa Inu, and Tosa Token. As a fighting dog, it is one of the largest breeds.
