Country of origin ...

When many of the lace workers of the region went to France for work in the mid-1800s, they took their toy Bulldogs with them.

These toy Bulldogs were sent in large numbers into France, where they were crossed with various other breeds and were given the name Boule-Dog Francais.

The French connection was established when some of the lace workers of Nottingham migrated and settled in the Calais area with their Toy Bulldogs.

Historical notes: The French Bulldog breed was developed by cross-breeding English Bulldogs with Toy Bulldogs.

In the mid-1800s, this smaller version of the English Bulldog was imported to France and French breeders bred the English Bulldogs with French Terriers or Toy Bulldogs (again another discrepancy) creating the French Bulldog.

Others say it was the crossing of a tiny Toy bulldog with an English bulldog that resulted in the French bulldog breed. Whatever its origins, the "Frenchie," as it is lovingly referred to, became popular in the United States in the late 1800s.
