Initially known as a Cantab, these small terriers later became referred to as Trumpington Terriers. An individual Trumpington Terrier by the name of Rags arrived at a stable near Norwich during sometime around the early 1900s.

 


Later called the Trumpington Terrier, the breed was popularized by Cambridge University students, among whom it became a fad. The name Norwich Terrier is the legacy of one prodigious Trumpington named Rags.

Around 1900, a Trumpington terrier named Rags came to a stable near Norwich and gained notoriety as a ratter as well as sire. He sired countless offspring and is the patriarch of the modern Norwich.

By the turn of the century one of these Trumpington Terriers moved to a stable near the city of Norwich. "Rags" was sandy colored, short of leg, stocky with cropped ears. A notorious ratter and dominant sire, he is the modern breed’s progenitor.

" The resulting puppies were called Trumpington terriers, and one of them, "Rags," became the founding sire of the Norwich Terrier breed, being bred with various Trumpington terriers and Glen of Imaal terriers.

Near the turn of the 20th century, a Trumpington Terrier named Rags emerged from a stable near Norwich as the sire to numerous dogs, and is often considered the main ancestor to the modern Norwich Terrier.

This breed is believed to be a descendent of either the Irish Terrier or the extinct Trumpington Terrier.
In the early days of kennel club recognition, the Norwich Terrier could have prick or drop ears.

Later, they were called the Trumpington Terrier, after a street in the area where the breed was first developed.

smallest terriers, he was bred for hunting the small game and rodents, but today this dog is a great companion for both: old and young people, especially those who like to get involved in sports. Another name of this breed is "Trumpington Terriers".

Small red terriers, descendants of Irish Terriers, had existed in the area since at least the 1860s, and these might be the ancestors of the Norwich, or it might have come from the Trumpington Terrier, a breed that no longer exists.
