The Swedish Vallhund is known in its native land as Vastgotaspets, which means "spitz of the West Goths." It closely resembles the Welsh Corgis, although the Vallhund is somewhat higher in the leg and shorter in the back.

The Swedish Vallhund, whose native name is Västgötaspets, is also commonly called the Swedish Cattle Dog or Vallhund for short. It was originally bred in Sweden for herding purposes and was brought to the US only in the 1980s.

Swedish Vallhund is a low-slung cattle herder and watchdog weighing less than 30 pounds and standing 12-16 inches at the shoulder. It is active and energetic and needs lots of exercise.
Both the Cardigan and Pembroke corgis are believed to have descended from the Swedish Vallhund as well as from Keeshonds, Pomeranians, and Schipperkes to varying degrees. The Pembroke Welsh corgi is generally accepted as being spitz in origin.
Both Corgi varieties may be descended from Swedish Vallhunds brought to Wales by Vikings in the 800's. Or perhaps the Cardigan is the older variety, brought to Wales by the Celts in about 1200 BC. The name "Corgi" comes from the Celtic word for dog.
Both types might have originated inside the Swedish Vallhund, a very much more mature breed brought to Wales by Vikings centuries earlier, inside the 800s. There might also be considered a network with the Norwegian Lundehund.
The Swedish Vallhund is seen to bear many similarities to today's Pembroke Welsh Corgi and is presumed to have been bred with native Welsh dogs.
For those who don't believe in fairy tales, there are historians who say that the Pembroke Welsh Corgi is descended from Vallhunds, Swedish cattle dogs that were brought to Wales by the Vikings in the 9th and 10th centuries.
Historical notes: The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is believed to have been descended from Swedish Vallhund dogs brought to Wales by the Vikings. Individual Cardigan Welsh Corgis' capabilities helped determine the economic status of their human masters.
They are believed to be descended from Swedish Vallhund dogs that came to Wales with the Vikings. Cor gi means "dwarf dog" in Welsh (and the OED gives the Welsh plural corgwn as an alternative to corgis).
