Von Willebrand Disease in Dogs: An Overview
Von Willebrand disease (vWD) is an inherited disorder that causes there to be too little of a certain adhesive protein, called von Willebrand factor ('vWF'), in the bloodstream.

Older Bassets occasionally develop Von Willebrand disease. Long dogs on short legs can easily develop back pain, especially if excessive weight is already a concern. Hip dysplasia can be a problem in Bassets.
Two other genetic health concerns in the breed are von Willebrand disease (vWD) and craniomandibular osteopathy (CMO); Scottie cramp, patellar luxation and cerebellar abiotrophy are also sometimes seen in this breed.
Common health issues include epilepsy and von Willebrand disease (a prolonged bleeding disorder). They are also susceptible to something called 'Scottie Cramp,' when the muscles randomly lock up.

When looking for a mate for your Basset Hound, it is important to check bloodlines for Von Willebrand disease and reproductive problems. This breed often has large litters, sometimes producing 15 or more puppies.
On occasion, PRA (progressive retinal atrophy), cataracts, seizures, vWD (Von Willebrand Disease), panosteitis, entropion, and ectropion are seen. It is suggested that regular testing of the hips, elbows, eyes, and cardiac system occur.
Occasionally this breed may suffer from epilepsy, von Willebrand Disease, patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), and deafness. Eye, hip, DNA, and thyroid tests are advised. Some may not tolerate ivermectin.
They are also prone to eye cataracts and displacement of the lens of the eye (called primary lens luxation), Leggâ€'Calvéâ€'Perthes syndrome (degeneration of the hip joint) and Von Willebrand disease (frequent bleeding), ...
The Scottie is highly prone to cancer of the bladder. They also may suffer from cataracts, hypothyroidism, and Von Willebrand Disease. This breed is especially sensitive to fleas and many have skin problems.
Hip dysplasia can also be a problem. Some bloodlines may be genetically prone to glaucoma, luxating patella and ectropion. Occasionally older Bassets may suffer from Von Willebrand disease and the youngs may develop panosteitis.
