The Scottish Terrier is one of the descendants of the Old Scotch Terrier, along with the Dandie Dinmont, Cairn, and West Highland White Terriers.
They are thought to be relative to the Cairn Terrier, West Highland White Terrier, Scottish Terrier and Sealyham Terrier. Queen Victoria is said to have bred the Skye Terrier in her royal kennels. There are a few theories to the origin of the breed.
A Scottish Terrier and a West Highland White Terrier are featured on the Black & White whisky label, and the breed has been used as the mascot for the Chum brand of dog food, appearing on both the brand's packaging and TV commercials.
The other four are Skye, Cairn, Dandie Dinmont, and West Highland White Terriers. Their nickname is "little diehard", given to them in the 19th century by George, the fourth Earl of Dumbarton.
The Skye Terrier classification included Cairns as well as dogs that are now known as Scottish Terriers, West Highland White Terriers. These breeds were distinguished only by color, as all three could come from the same litter.
A similar breed with similar origins is the West Highland White Terrier.
