Westie is another name given for the West Highland white terrier. These dogs are sturdy built, but small in size. They have a round face. They have a tapering muzzle. It is blunt and it’s roughly shorter than the skull. They have a black nose.

Westies are descended from Cairn Terriers, who occasionally whelped white puppies naturally, and Scottish Terriers; who also occasionally produced white offspring.

Breeder List ...

Westies, as they are nicknamed, carry double coats of hard hair on top and soft, thick fur underneath. Although they do shed, you'll find much less loose hair around the house from this breed than many others.

Westies active indoors, and enjoys going for walks and playing in the park. Apartment living would suit this breed, as would living in the middle of nowhere with lots of exciting sights and smells. They do not require a backyard/garden.

Westies have carrot shaped tails that should never be docked.

Westies are essentially either white Cairn Terriers, who occasionally whelped white puppies naturally, or white Scottish Terriers; references vary.

Westies are generally healthy, but like all breeds, they're prone to certain health conditions. Not all Westies will get any or all of these diseases, but it's important to be aware of them if you're considering this breed.

A Westie does not require a huge amount of exercise but opportunities for boredom should be avoided as it is usually the cause for the dog to create trouble. Being earth dogs, they do like to dig.

The Westie was bred to hunt otter, fox and vermin in Scotland. The West Highland White shares its ancestry with the Scottish, Cairn and Dandie Dinmont Terriers.

The Westie is compact and short-coupled. It must be small enough to fit between rocks in a narrow passageway that was the typical fox den in its area of origin. These passages were often so narrow that the dog could not turn around.

The Westie, which has an average lifespan of 12 to 14 years, may be prone to minor health problems like Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca (KCS), copper toxicosis, patellar luxation, and cataract, and major problems such as Legg-Perthes Disease, ...

The Westie is a social dog that likes to be at the center of activity. It is independent, demanding, and stubborn; but also friendly and happy. It can be shy around strangers and doesn’t like rough play.

The Westie needs either a short to moderate walk on leash or a good game in the yard every day. Her wire coat needs combing two or three times weekly, plus shaping every three months. Shaping for pets is by clipping or stripping.

The Westie should be skilled to be accustomed to any grooming features as a youthful puppy prior to grooming actually begins, beginning with two to three minutes a morning to start with.

As the Westie was bred to be an earth dog, it can be a great digger if not taught at an early age that they must not dig in your favourite flower bed. IDEAL OWNERS
The Westie makes an ideal family pet as they are a great lover of human company.

EXERCISE
Westies are mad about playing with a ball, romping and frolicking. They need lots of exercise so do not deny them it. They enjoy digging and some of them like to wander off so make sure your garden is very well fenced.

The West Highland White Terrier, or "Westie," is a joyful, loving, devoted, playful, feisty and strong-willed dog. He loves and craves companionship and wants to be at the center of your life and activities.

Like other small Scottish terriers, the West Highland White Terrier or Westie was bred to hunt vermin. At one time it was classed along with the Cairn and Skye Terriers as a Small Highland Working Terrier.

Exercise Requirements:The Westie will enjoy up to 45 minutes of walks a day. In parallel plenty play time off a leash in the house or garden is ideal.

There was a time when the Westie, Skye, Cairn, and Scottish Terrier were all thought of as members of the same breed.

The Westie is an active breed, and needs plenty of exercise, and are very intelligent, a Westie's coat needs to be brushed and combed every day and trimmed several times a year.

To the novice, Scotties, Cairns, and Westies are similar in appearance.
