Wetterhoun is Dutch for "water dog." Developed by the efficient breeders of the Dutch province of Friesland at least 400 years ago, this rare breed is seldom seen outside its native land.

The breed was developed by the Dutch over 400 years ago, out of the desire for a dog specialized in locating and killing otters. The rough and soundly built breed weighs 33 to 44 pounds and stands 21 to 23 inches tall.

The Wetterhoun (plural: Wetterhounen) is a breed of dog also called the Otterhoun or Frisian Water Dog. They originate from the Friesland region in the Netherlands.
The Wetterhoun Today
Early Wetterhounen varied greatly in appearance. Colors included black and white, white, grey, dogs with red patches, and even black and tan.
Wetterhouns are stubborn and independent like many intelligent breeds. They will not listen to owners who are weak or timid. They have a friendly personality with their family and are good with children.
Temperament: Wetterhouns are not suitable for New Dog Owners. This Rugged and Soundly built water dog is an unsinkable all weather all purpose dog. Mostly used as a farmhand or companion in Holland.
The hair is thick, curled of the Wetterhoun which covers the whole body except the head and legs that have the short hair but. The colors of the hair include: the liver and target, black and white, solid liver or the solid black.
The breed's looks and purpose have not changed for decades, although in earlier days the breed was often mixed with another Friesian breed: the Wetterhoun, because only working capacities were counted.
