Wheaten temperament is unique, combining the alert intelligence of the terrier tribe with the steadiness of the working dog.
Wheaten appearance
The Wheaten is a balanced, well-muscled, square dog with a distinctive coat and color and a docked tail. Males are 18-19 inches tall and weigh 35-40 pounds, and females are a bit smaller.
Wheaten Terriers need quite a bit of exercise including long daily walks and lots of time to romp and play ball in the backyard. Wheatens will be much quieter around the house if they get sufficient exercise.
Wheaten terriers stay young at heart for many years. They are quite active. Their temperament is curious and friendly. Wheaten owners are familiar with the famous "wheaten greetin'" these friendly dogs treat visitors with. They are very sociable.
Wheaten Terriers can have allergies to food and outdoors.

The Wheaten Terrier can be differentiated from other terriers by its abundant single coat, which is soft, silky, long, slightly wavy and may be any shade of wheaten or rust color.
The Wheaten loves human companionship, and is generally good with other pets. Though his inherited instincts aren't as strong as other terrier breeds, he will still take chase after cats and other small animals if he catches sight of them.
The Wheaten is ideal for those living in an apartment, as it is able to obtain a good amount of exercise indoors or in a small yard. This breed, however, doesn't respond well to heat.
The Wheaten is a fun-loving, intelligent dog. It can be vocal, making it a good watch dog although no one should consider this breed to deter burglars as the dog will greet the burglar as a friend.
The Wheaten makes a playful companion at home and a fun-loving partner in the field. It is affectionate, congenial and much gentler than most terriers. It is generally responsive to its owner's wishes but can be headstrong at times.

The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is thought to be the traditional Irish farm dog. It was the poorer folk's dog; large enough to enforce its presence but not so large that it was expensive to keep.
