The Whippet looks like a Greyhound in miniature, and the Greyhound undoubtedly played a part in its make-up. It is uncertain whether the Pharaoh Hound, as seems likely, or some other imported hound or terrier, was the other half of the cross.

The Whippet was used for coursing and the ability to snap rabbits gave him the nickname “snapdog'. With the industrial revolution, farmers migrated to the cities and took their dogs with them.

The Whippet was bred some 150 years ago and comes from the Italian Greyhound and a small sized greyhound along with some terriers. It was originally called a snap dog and was used to hunt rabbits and as a ratter. Later it was used as a race dog.

The Whippet is a fast-running, robust, intelligent, and confident dog. This dog can run up to 35 miles per hour (56 kph) for short distances.

Coat: The Whippet has a short, tight, and smooth coat. Firm in texture, yet soft. Coat does not adapt well to colder climates so this breed needs a considerable amount of protection from cold weather.

Temperament: Whippets are amiable, friendly, gentle, but capable of great intensity during sporting pursuits. They may seem fragile, but they compete with tenacity during races.

All dogs with double coats shed, even Dobermans, Labradors, and Whippets. Those breeds with single coats that don`t shed, such as poodles and terriers, need clipping or constant brushing to keep their coats from matting.

Originally bred from a combination of local terriers with an outcross to whippets, this is a lean, racy and assertive terrier. Miners in the Rothbury area of Northumberland developed the breed sometime in the 18th century.

Occasional crosses to other breeds arguably included the whippet (for speed) and Dandie Dinmont terrier (for coat), but no documented evidence of such crosses exist, and some breed historians assert that such crosses were never made.

In America, the breeders crossed three different breeds such as the Beagle, Small Fox Terrier, and the Whippet to maintain some of the characteristics that they liked about these animals.

Originally called the "Black and Tan," he was developed in the 19th century by John Hulme, a breeder who crossed a whippet with rat-hunting terrier to create a dog that would gamely chase and hunt small animals.
