It was developed from crossings between the Bedlington and the Old English Wirehaired Terrier in England's Lake District. It was used to hunt den animals such as badger and fox, and also otter.
They came from Old English Wirehaired Terriers, Bedlington Terriers, Border Collies and Dandie Dinmont Terriers. They have had several different names throughout their history, but were recognized as the Lakeland Terrier in 1921.
The Lakeland Terrier was developed by cross-breeding the Bedlington and the Old English Wirehaired Terrier (some sources say the Fox Terrier with the Airedale) in England's Lake District, where it was used to hunt foxes.
