(Wolfspitz) (Chien Loup) (German Wolfspitz) The Keeshond (plural: Keeshonden) is a compact little breed, and strongly resembles its ancestor, the Samoyed. The Keeshond has oblique chestnut eyes and erect triangular ears.
The Wolfspitz is wolf gray and is the largest of the group at 18 inches tall. This breed is probably the progenitor of the Keeshond, the lively Dutch dog that was a favorite of the working class in the lowland country.
The German Wolfspitz and the Dutch Keeshond, apparently, have a common origin, but their breeding was going on several somewhat independent directions. The Keeshond became finally a companion dog, the best friend of the whole family.

History: Miniature Schnauzers' actual roots are uncertain, but there is speculation that the black Poodle, the Wolfspitz and a rough coated German Terrier are breeds which may have played a part in the Schnauzer's early development.
The Keeshond comes in other names that include Keeshonden, Wolfspitz or Chien Loup. It is a medium-sized dog whose physical features make it look like it's a toy wolf and a small lion combined.
Both are smaller versions of the Great German Spitz or Wolfspitz. Although it is difficult to pinpoint the origin of spitz dogs, they probably come from Scandinavia and were taken to other countries by the Vikings.

In 1960 a breed was evolved by crossing a Chow Chow and a Wolfspitz. This was first called "Wolf-Chow" and then, after crossing with a Samoyed, was re-named "Eurasier" (Eurasian).
Eurasiers originated in Germany in 1960, when the founder, Julius Wipfel, set out together with Charlotte Baldamus and a small group of enthusiasts to create a breed with the best qualities of the Chow Chow and the Wolfspitz.
To accomplish his goal he cross bred Chow Chow dogs with German Wolfspitz bitches and produced the predecessor of the Eurasier - the Wolf-Chow.
At that time, crosses were made with the gray Wolfspitz and black German Poodles to produce the distinctive texture and color of the breed's hair.
The likely progenitors of the Schnauzer include the black German Poodle, the gray Wolfspitz and Wire-haired Pinscher. In fact the breed was first shown in 1870 Germany under the name of Wire-haired Pinscher.
