The breed was developed in the United States during the late 1800s by descendants from the English, Scottish, and Irish immigrant dogs.

 


The breed, which was also known as the Yankee Terrier, Pit Bull Terrier, Half-Half, and American Bull Terrier for many years was made and recognized as the American Staffordshire Terrier by the American Kennel Club in 1936.

" Here they became known as the pit bull terrier, American bull terrier and even Yankee terrier. Americans favored a slightly bigger dog than the English preferred, and with time the two strains diverged.

Sometimes also referred to as a Yankee Terrier, American Bull Terrier or Half and Half. It was the first breed registered by the United Kennel Club in 1898. Modern breeding has been geared towards instilling a more gentle temperament.

In the US, the breed has been called Pit Dog, Pit Bull Terrier, American Bull Terrier, and Yankee Terrier, and American Pit Bull Terrier.

These dogs began to find their way into America as early as 1870, where they became known as Pit Dog, Pit Bull Terrier, later American Bull Terrier, and still later as Yankee Terrier.

Unlike dogfighting fans in England, however, Americans preferred fighting larger "pits." In the U.S., the dogs were known by such names as Yankee Terrier, Pit Bull Terrier, and American Bull Terrier.
