Yorkies, or Yorkshire Terriers, are small terrier dogs that originate from Yorkshire in England. They are known for their very small and light bodies and their unique fur, which is silky and can grow to be very long.
Yorkies are brave, energetic, and affectionate. They are often protective of their masters, and they are great watchdogs. They are good with older children and other pets as long as they are familiar with them.
Yorkies also need more daily care than most terriers. Although they don't shed much, the long, silky hair will tangle and mat if not properly brushed. Diet is important; soft foods can exacerbate problems with already weak teeth and gums.

Yorkies typically get along well with other dogs and love to play together with them. However, they are terriers, and even an old, sedentary lap dog may eagerly hunt rodents.
Yorkies tend to develop cataracts in their old age, but their small size limits the effects of conditions such as arthritis.
Yorkies are spunky and intelligent dogs that generally get along with other dogs and children. They do, however, tend to think that they are larger in size than what they really are and will go after another dog that is much larger in size.
Yorkies typically get along well with cats or other dogs, and love to play together in groups. However, they are still terriers, and even an old, sedentary lap dog will eagerly hunt rodents.
Yorkies are friendly and intelligent, but dislike roughhousing. Some say they are big dogs in a small dog’s body, because of their bold and confident nature. Yorkshire Terriers are eager for adventure and do well in urban or rural living.
Yorkies are also very intelligent, and can quickly learn to do anything they actually want to do, so obedience training and agility training are both terrific options for owners and dogs to pursue.
Yorkies tend to exercise themselves within the home, but they also need to have interaction in the form of games. They appreciate a short walk outdoors on leash and enjoy the chance to explore a safe area.
Yorkies are NOT suited to young children, no matter how well-meaning the child.
Yorkies are inconsistent in size. It's not unusual for a single litter to contain one Yorkie weighing less than four pounds, one who weighs five or six pounds, and one who grows to be 12 to 15 pounds.

The Yorkie was introduced to the United States in 1872, but there was confusion early on about the dog's standard size. The weight of early Yorkies ballooned to as much as 12 or 14 pounds.
Most Yorkies should be groomed at least three times a week to keep their hair from matting. Dogs with silkier coats may only need to be groomed once a week.

Although Yorkies do not need a lot of exercise, they thoroughly enjoy playing and love to go for walks. They suit apartment life well as they do not need a backyard/garden and are active indoors.
