Acid Rain
Acid Rain is rain water that contains chemicals from industrial processes that are harmful to plant and animal life. Acid rain is a serious environmental problem that affects large parts of the United States and Canada.

 


Acid rain occurs when fossil fuels such as coal, gasoline, and fuel oils are burned and emit oxides of sulfur, carbon, and nitrogen into the air. These oxides combine with moisture in the air to form sulfuric acid, carbonic acid, and nitric acid.

Many forests, streams, and lakes-and the creatures that live in them-are still suffering damage from acid rain. Even though the problem of acid rain has been reduced, sulfur and nitrogen pollution levels must be brought down further.

The chemicals and heavy metals used in fireworks also take their toll on the environment, sometimes contributing to water supply contamination and even acid rain.

That is a little acidic because even pure rainwater falls through carbon dioxide in the air. Rain with a pH of less than about 5.3 is considered acid rain. Rain in the northeastern states has a pH between 4 and 5. This is serious acid rain.

NOx is a greenhouse gas and is an ingredient of acid rain and smog.

This can contribute to the formation of acid rain. Regulations require that air pollution control equipment remove either 99% of the hydrochloric acid, or that the emissions contain less than four pounds per hour.
