air gap. An open vertical drop, or vertical empty space, that separates a drinking (potable) water supply to be protected from another water system in a water treatment plant or other location.

 


Air Gap: Open vertical gap or empty space that separates drinking water supply to be protected from another water system in a treatment plant or other location.

The cold discharge apparatus consists of two metal plates separated by an air gap and a high dielectric strength electrical insulator such as borosilicate glass or mica.

BACKFLOW PREVENTION: Prevention of the flow of any foreign liquids, gases, or substances into the distribution pipelines of a potable water supply; accomplished by an air gap or mechanical backflow obstacle.
