Air Pollution
Substances released by humans into the Earth's atmosphere that can be harmful to people, as well as animals, plant life, and the environment in general.

Air pollution comes from many different sources such as factories, power plants, dry cleaners, cars, buses, trucks and even windblown dust and wildfires.

Air Pollution Threatens the Health of Millions of Americans
Dear EarthTalk: How many Americans are adversely affected by air pollution and what can we do to improve air quality? "Tom Weaver, Sioux City, IA ...

Air Pollution Prevention
The quality of the air we breathe can have a significant impact on our quality of life. Many communities across the nation have a "serious" air pollution problem.

Air Pollution Episode
A period of abnormally high concentration of air pollutants, often due to low winds and temperature inversion, that can cause illness and death. (See episode, pollution.)

Indoor Air Pollution: Chemical, physical, or biological contaminants in indoor air.

Air Pollution
You probably know someone with asthma, or maybe you have this condition yourself. Certain kinds of air pollutants, like ozone, can make asthma and other lung conditions worse.

Air pollution - contaminants or substances in the air that interfere with human health or produce other harmful environmental effects. Read our "What is Air Pollution?" article for further information.

Air Pollution: Airborne contaminants or pollutants that adversely affect the environment or human health. A byproduct of the manufacturing process and transportation of goods. Buying eco-friendly products indirectly reduces air pollution.

air pollution - toxic or radioactive gases or particulate matter introduced into the atmosphere, usually as a result of human activity.

Air Pollution - The presence of contaminants or pollutant substances in the air that interfere with human health or welfare, or produce other harmful environmental effects.

AIR POLLUTION INSIDE HOMES
We spend a large part of our lives at home and it does not often cross our mind that the air we are breathing may be polluted. Pollution inside homes is called 'indoor air pollution'.

Air Pollution Control Device - Mechanism or equipment that cleans emissions generated by a source (e.g. an incinerator, industrial smokestack, or an automobile exhaust system) by removing pollutants that would otherwise be released to the ...

Air pollution-Substances that are present in the air that interfere with the health, welfare or comfort of individuals. These substances also cause harm to the environment and result from human activity or natural processes. (ISO) ...

Air Pollution - The contamination of the atmosphere by any toxic or radioactive gases and particulate matter as a result of human activity. [Environmental Science and Technology; v28; 1633-1649; Sept 1994.] [New Scientist; v143; 8; 1994.] ...

air pollution control system
Network of organizations which monitor air pollution.
Group of measures or processes used to minimize or prevent air pollution.
albuminuria
Presence of albumin, derived from plasma, in the urine.

Air pollution caused by emissions of particulate matter, carbon monoxide, total suspended particulates, and polycyclic organic matter from wood-burning stoves.

Air pollution control devices that use water to remove particulate matter from emissions.
Vinyl Chloride
A chemical compound, used in producing some plastics, that is believed to be oncogenic.

Air pollution typically associated with oxidants.
Smoke
Particles suspended in air after incomplete combustion.

An air pollution control device in which acid gases are neutralized by contact with an alkaline solution.
CERCLA
See Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act of 1980.

* Air pollution
The existence in the air of substances in concentrations that are determined unacceptable to human health and the environment.

smog Air pollution associated with oxidants. See photochemical smog.
smoke Particles suspended in an emission of exhaust after incomplete combustion that interferes with light transmission.
SNARL Suggested No Adverse Response Level.

Scrubber: An air pollution device that uses a spray of water or reactant or a dry process to trap pollutants in emissions.

acid precipitation air pollution consisting of all forms of precipitation, including wet and dry particles, that have an acidity lower than normal rainfall (pH 5.6).
acid rain. See acid precipitation.

For example, electricity is produced at power stations on the Highveld which burn low-grade coal, causing air pollution impacts in Mpumalanga province due to sulphur dioxide emissions.

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS - AIR POLLUTION
Many studies have shown that ozone has the potential to reduce photosynthesis and growth in plants.

There are other sources of indoor air pollution by VOC’s however, including wood products that use formaldehyde as a binder. Fortunately, low- or no-VOC substitutes are becoming more common.
