Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD)
An indirect measure of the concentration of biologically degradable material present in organic wastes. It usually reflects the amount of oxygen consumed in five days by biological processes breaking down organic waste.

BOD See: Biological oxygen demand.
BOTTLE BANK Containers meant to receive beverage bottles which people drop off to be recycled.
BOTTLE BILL A law requiring deposits on beverage containers.

BOD See biochemical oxygen demand.
C

Carbonaceous biochemical oxygen demand (CBOD) The amount of oxygen required to oxidize any carbon containing matter present in a water.

BOD: Biochemical Oxygen Demand. A measure of the amount of oxygen required to neutralize organic wastes
BOD5: The amount of dissolved oxygen consumed in five days by bacteria that perform biological degradation of organic matter.

BOD Biological Oxygen Demand
This is the amount of oxygen taken from the water by all processes - mainly biological. Some pollutants demand this oxygen, thereby depriving other biological processes.

BOD. See biochemical oxygen demand.
bonnet (BON-it). The cover on a gate valve.
brackish. Mixed fresh and salt waters.

BOD See biochemical oxygen demand.
BOD5 Five-day biochemical oxygen demand; the oxygen demand exerted after five days of a BOD test. See Biochemical Oxygen Demand.

Biocide
A chemical that is toxic to microrganisms. Biocides are often used to eliminate bacteria and other single-cell organisms from water.

Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) A measure of the amount of oxygen consumed in the biological processes that break down organic matter in water.

Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD): laboratory measurement of the amount of oxygen consumed by microorganisms while decomposing organic matter in a product.

biochemical oxygen demand (BOD)
The quantity of largely organic, materials present in a water sample as measured by a specific test.

Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) (D):
BOD is a measure of the amount of oxygen consumed by micro-organism in breaking down organic matter in effluent during a certain period.

The amount of oxygen required by aerobic biological processes to break down the organic matter in water. BOD is a measure of the pollutional strength of biodegradeable waste on dissolved oxygen in water.

Tertiary Treatment: Advanced cleaning of wastewater that goes beyond the secondary or biological stage, removing nutrients such as phosphorus, nitrogen, and most BOD and suspended solids.
