Biochemical Oxygen Demand or BOD
A measure for the amount of oxygen required in the biological processes that break down organic matter in water. Higher BOD levels indicate higher levels of pollution.

Chemical oxygen demand (COD) MORE INFO
the amount of oxygen (in mg) required for the complete chemical oxidation of organic and inorganic material in 1 litre of an effluent ...

Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD): laboratory measurement of the amount of oxygen used in chemical reactions that occur in water as a result of the addition of wastes.

Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD): The amount of oxygen (measured in mg/L) that is consumed in the oxidation of organic and inorganic matter, under test conditions.

Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD): A measure of the oxygen required to oxidize all compounds, both organic and inorganic, in water.

chemical oxygen demand (COD)
Measure of the amount of oxygen, divided by the volume of the system, required to oxidize the organic (and inorganic) matter in wastewater using a chemically oxidizing agent.

chemical oxygen demand (COD)
Quantitative measure of the strength of contamination by organic and inorganic carbon materials.

chemical oxygen demand (COD) An indirect measure of the amount of oxygen required to oxidize by inorganic and organic matter in water.

C chemical oxygen demand
Definition (english only)
The quantity of oxygen used in biological and non-biological oxidation of materials in water; a measure of water quality.

Chemical oxygen demand (COD) The amount of oxygen required to oxidize any organic matter in the water using harsh chemical conditions.

activated sludge loading The pounds of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) in the applied liquid per unit volume of aeration capacity or per pound of activated sludge per day. See mean cell residence time.

Kinetic Rate Coefficient- A number that describes the rate at which a water constituent such as a biochemical oxygen demand or dissolved oxygen rises or falls, or at which an air pollutant reacts.

First steps in wastewater treatment; screens and sedimentation tanks are used to remove most materials that float or will settle. Primary treatment removes about 30 percent of carbonaceous biochemical oxygen demand from domestic sewage.
