Voluntary Fast Food Waste Reduction Makes Headlines
There have been some strides in the fast food business with regard to packaging materials and waste reduction, but it has all been voluntary and usually under pressure from green groups.

 


Food Waste
Uneaten food and food preparation wastes from residences and commercial establishments such as grocery stores, restaurants, and produce stands, institutional cafeterias and kitchens, and industrial sources like employee lunchrooms.

Garbage
Food waste (animal and vegetable) resulting from the handling, storage, packaging, sale, preparation, cooking, and serving of foods.

Backyard Composting Diversion of organic food waste and yard trimmings from the municipal waste stream by composting them in one's yard through controlled decomposition of organic matter by bacteria and fungi into a humus-like product.

Biodegradable products include all plant and animal material, paper, food waste and fibers. Plastic, glass and metals are not biodegradable.

Oxygen Demand: materials such as food waste and dead plant or animal tissue that use up dissolved oxygen in the water when they are degraded through chemical or biological processes.

Rubbish- Solid waste, excluding food waste and ashes, from homes, institutions, and workplaces. Run-Off- That part of precipitation, snow melt, or irrigation water that runs off the land into streams or other surface-water.

bloom (algal) : A proliferation of algae and/or higher aquatic plants in a body of water; often related to pollution, especially when pollutants accelerate growth.

blackwater Water that contains animal, human, or food waste.
blank A bottle containing only dilution water or distilled water; the sample being tested is not added.

Black water: Water that contains animal, human, or food waste.
Brine Mud: Waste material, often associated with well-drilling or mining, composed of mineral salts or other inorganic compounds.

RUBBISH Solid waste that does not contain food waste.
SALVAGE The act of obtaining a secondary material through collection, sorting, etc.
