Giardia Lamblia: Flagellate protozoan which is shed during its cyst stage into the feces of man and animals. When water containing these cysts is ingested, the protozoan causes a severe gastrointestinal disease called Giardiasis.

Giardia lamblia A pathogenic protozoa excreted by animals and whose cysts can infect humans causing the enteric disease, giardiasis. Giardia is highly resistant to chlorination.

Possible pathogens include viruses, bacteria including Escherichia coli and Shigella, and protozoans including Giardia lamblia and Cryptosporidium.

Giardiasis: presence of the Giardia lamblia protozoan in the human small intestine which can cause diarrhea.

Since a portion of the groundwater source's recharge is from surface water, the groundwater is at risk of contamination from pathogens such as Giardia lamblia and viruses, which are not normally found in groundwater.
