Hard water

Environment Hammer millHarvest

Hard water: Water containing a high level of calcium, magnesium, and other minerals. Hard water reduces the cleansing power of soap and produces scale in hot water lines and appliances.

hard water Alkaline water containing dissolved salts that interfere with some industrial processes and prevent soap from lathering. Water may be considered hard if it has a hardness greater than the typical hardness of water from a region.

Hard WaterWater containing excessive amounts of calcium and magnesium ions which prevents soap from lathering and produces scale and incrustation.

Hard water
Water that contains a great number of positive ions. The hardness is determined by the number of calcium and magnesium atoms present. Soap usually dissolves badly in hard water.

Hardness: When hard water is used with soap it will form an insoluble residue and hard water will form a scale in utensils in which the water has been allowed to evaporate. Hardness is mainly caused by calcium and magnesium ions.

in hard water areas. With the exception of calcium, boiling does not remove solutes of higher boiling point than water, and in fact increases their concentration (due to some water being lost as vapour).

Water Softener Water softeners remove calcium and magnesium from hard water by replacing the calcium and magnesium ions with sodium ions.

Hard water usually associated with soft, easily eroded rocks such as limestone.
water, soft water that is low in dissolved mineral salts. Soft water is associated with hard, erosion-resistant rocks.

It is important because hard waters require increased amounts of soap for bathing or washing clothes and because of scale formation on piping, cooking vessels, water heaters, boilers, heat exchangers, etc.

When present in water, it can indicate salinity and alkalinity. Contributes to hard water when present in high concentrations. It is an essential nutrient for animals and humans. Not generally considered toxic.
