Inversion

Environment InventoryIon

Inversion - the phenomenon of a layer of warm air pressing down on cooler air below it. Inversions are a special problem because they prevent the natural dispersion and dilution of air contaminants

inversion In meteorology, a condition in which cooler surface air is trapped under an upper layer of warmer air preventing vertical circulation.

Inversion: A layer of warm air in the atmosphere that prevents the rise of cooling air and traps pollutants beneath it.

inversion : An atmospheric condition caused by increasing temperature with elevation, resulting in a layer of warm air preventing the rise of cooler air trapped beneath.

Inversion, Inverting: The process of deriving a model of the subsurface that is consistent with the geophysical data obtained. Generally refers to a more specific methodology than interpretation.
Isothermal: Being at constant temperature.

Inversion- A layer of warm air that prevents the rise of cooling air and traps pollutants beneath it; can cause an air pollution episode.
Ion- An electrically charged atom or group of atoms.

Temperature Inversion - The abnormal reversal of temperature in the troposphere caused meteorological conditions. This leads to the entrapment of urban air pollution because mixing of surface air into the rest of the troposphere is limited.

Temperature Inversion - One of the weather conditions that are often associated with serious smog episodes in some portions of the country.

inversion An atmospheric condition occurring when a layer of cool air is trapped by a layer of warm air and is unable to rise.

inversion An anomaly in the normal positive lapse rate; usually refers to a thermal inversion, in which temperature increases rather than decreases with height.

Preparing croplands by using a special implement that avoids complete inversion of the soil as in conventional plowing. Chisel plowing can leave a protective cover or crops residues on the soil surface to help prevent erosion and improve filtration.

Chisel Plowing: Preparing croplands by using a special implement that avoids complete inversion of the soil as in conventional plowing.

Cropland preparation by a special implement (chisel) that avoids complete inversion of the soil (as occurs with conventional moldboard plowing).

A period of abnormally high concentration of air pollutants, often due to low winds and temperature inversion, that can cause illness and death. (See episode, pollution.)

Air Mass: A large volume of air with certain meteorological or polluted characteristics--e.g., a heat inversion or smogginess--while in one location. The characteristics can change as the air mass moves away.
