Nitrogen Fixation is the conversion of airborne nitrogen into nitrates, mainly by bacteria mainly in the soil. Nitrogen has little biological use, nitrates are food to other plants.

It is cycled between air and soil by means of the nitrogen cycle which includes a process known as nitrogen fixation. Nitrogen fixation may take place through either industrial (fertilisers) or natural processes.

From this association, the host plant may gain usable ammonia from unusable atmospheric nitrogen through a process called nitrogen fixation (N2 -> NO3 and NH4). The bacteria gain a home and a steady source of food from the host plant.
