Petroleum-Based Fertilizers
Soil fertilizers derived from petroleum and through a chemical process that then creates the chemicals that can be used for providing plant nutrients for agriculture and gardening.

Total Recovered Petroleum Hydrocarbon: A method for measuring petroleum hydrocarbons in samples of soil or water.
Total Suspended Particle: A method of monitoring airborne particulate matter by total weight.

Petroleum: Crude oil or any fraction thereof that is liquid under normal conditions of temperature and pressure.

petroleum derivatives Chemicals formed when gasoline breaks down in contact with groundwater.
petrology The study of the origins, history, occurrence, structure, chemical composition, and classification of rocks.

Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH): Measure of the concentration or mass of petroleum hydrocarbon constituents present in a given amount of soil or water.

Petroleum Statistics
Detailed information about the production, use and costs of oil and other petroleum products.

Petroleum refineries, such as Amoco Chemical Co. (Naperville, IL) convert plastic waste into basic chemicals. Some efforts to reuse plastic waste have focused on burning the waste for energy.

Petroleum
A complex mixture of naturally occurring hydrocarbon compounds found in rock. Petroleum can range from solid to gas, but the term is generally used to refer to liquid crude oil.
Phase I Environmental Assessment ...

A petroleum derivative widely used in the chemical industry. A few uses are: synthesis of rubber, nylon, polystyrene, and pesticides; and production of gasoline.

A petroleum hydrocarbon in the liquid free or non-aqueous phase. (See> non-aqueous phase liquid.)

Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH): A measure of the mass or concentration of all the petroleum constituents present in a given amount of air, soil, or water.

Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG): (See Alternative Fuels.)
Low Emission Vehicle (LEV): A vehicle that meets the ARB's low emission vehicle standards. For more information, click here.

liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) = natural gas (predominantly methane, CH4) that has been converted temporarily to liquid form for ease of storage or transport
LNG = liquefied natural gas
loss of biodiversity = ...

LPG (Liquid Petroleum Gas) - is a mixture of short hydrocarbons with most of the volume being propane and butane.

gasoline - petroleum fuel, used to power cars, trucks, lawn mowers, etc.
geothermal - literally, heat from the earth; energy obtained from the hot areas under the surface of the earth.

Free Product- A petroleum hydrocarbon in the liquid free or non aqueous phase.

When you produce biofuel, you must expend almost as much energy in petroleum as you get back in ethanol. Further, you create more global warming gases than had you just burned the petroleum.

Mining water use: Water use for the extraction of minerals occurring naturally including solids, such as coal and ores; liquids, such as crude petroleum; and gases, such as natural gas.

A major portion of smog-formers comes from burning of petroleum-based fuels such as gasoline. Other smog-formers, volatile organic compounds, are found in products such as paints and solvents.

biofuel: low-emission petroleum substitute made from plant sources; includes ethanol made from cereals and sugarcane and biodiesel made from vegetable oils or animal waste. Biofuel can also be made from animal tallow.

Organic Food: (From the USDA) Food produced without: antibiotics; growth hormones; most conventional pesticides; petroleum- based fertilizers or sewage sludge-based fertilizers; bioengineering; or ionizing radiation.

As the basis for all living things, carbon is present in particular abundance in a solid and a liquid form in trees, other plants, and soils, and in various forms in all fossil fuels, including coal (solid), petroleum (liquid), and methane (gas).

Fossil fuels: Coal, oil, petroleum, and natural gas and other hydrocarbons are called fossil fuels because they are made of fossilized, carbon-rich plant and animal remains.

Plastic - A material made from petroleum capable of being molded, extruded, or cast into various shapes. There are many different kinds of plastic made from different combinations of compounds.

Coal, natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas, and fuels derived from crude oil (including petrol and diesel). They are called fossil fuels because they have been formed over long periods of time from ancient fossilised organic matter

Petroleum products such as kerosene, gasoline and mineral spirits contain VOCs. Chlorinated solvents such as those used by dry cleaners or contained in paint strippers are also VOCs. See "organic" and "volatile".

Organic Compound: any carbon-based substance, including some petroleum products, solvents, pesticides, and halomethanes. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are those which are readily vaporized; a number of these are known or probable carcinogens.

Phenols - Organic compounds that are byproducts of petroleum refining, tanning, and textile, dye and resin manufacturing. Low concentrations cause taste and odor problems in water; higher concentrations can kill aquatic life and humans.

A compound built from carbon and hydrogen atoms joined in a linear chain. Petroleum products are composed primarily of aliphatic hydrocarbons.
Aliquot
A measured portion of a sample taken for analysis.

A tank located at least partially underground and designed to hold gasoline or other petroleum products or chemicals.
Unsaturated Zone
The area above the water table where soil pores are not fully saturated, although some water may be present.

Plastic - man-made durable and flexible synthetic-based product. Composed mainly of petroleum.
Plastic bags - not very good for the environment. Read some tips on what to do with plastic bags.

Hydrocarbon Organic compounds that are built of carbon and hydrogen atoms and are often used in petroleum industries.
I
Impermeable Not easily penetrated by water.

Most synthetic products (plastic, nylon, polyester, polystyrene, etc.) are made from petroleum byproducts, while synthetic components of food, personal care products and pharmaceuticals are produced with chemicals in a laboratory.

Underground Storage Tank (UST): A tank located at least partially underground and designed to hold gasoline or other petroleum products or chemicals.

Organic compounds that are built of carbon and hydrogen atoms and are often used in petroleum industries.
Hydroelectric power water use ...

Fossil Fuels: Combustible geologic deposits of carbon in reduced form and of biological origin including coal, petroleum and natural gas.

clean fuels Blends or substitutes for gasoline fuels, including compressed natural gas, methanol, ethanol, liquified petroleum gas, and others.

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs): compounds that vaporize easily and have low water solubility that are often human-made chemicals used and produced in the manufacture of paints, pharmaceuticals, refrigerants and are components of petroleum ...

fossil fuel Any hydrocarbon deposit that can be burned for heat or power, such as petroleum, coal, and natural gas.
