Plastics Less Commonly Recycled
Polyvinyl chloride, commonly used in plastic pipes, shower curtains, medical tubing, vinyl dashboards, and even some baby bottle nipples, gets number 3.

Starch-based plastics made from soy, corn or potatoes. These plastics can be composted-breaking down 60 percent or more within 180 days. To break down, bio based plastics need water, heat and air.

Paper Processor/Plastics Processor
Intermediate facility where recovered paper or plastic products and materials are sorted, decontaminated, and prepared for final recycling.

Plastics
Plastic bottles and containers are usually all recyclable, you should also be able to find a recycle bin for plastics at your recycle centre.

plastics - durable and flexible synthetic-based products, some of which are difficult to recycle and pose problems with toxic properties, especially PVC plastic.

Plastics: Non-metallic chemoreactive compounds molded into rigid or pliable construction materials, fabrics, etc.

Other Plastics
Recyclable plastic from appliances, eating utensils, plates, containers, toys, and various kinds of equipment. Does not include heavy-duty plastics such as yielding materials.

Thermoplastics: Man-made materials used for well casing; composed of different formulations of plastics (e.g. PVC) which are softened by heating and hardened by cooling so that they are easily moulded and extruded.

Plastics are typically polymers of high molecular weight, and may contain other substances to improve performance and/or reduce costs.

On plastics, it is used along with a numbering system (1-7) to help designate plastic resins used in the product. The three arrows on the symbol represent different components of the recycling process.

All plastics marked 1 to 7 are theoretically recyclable though in practice many are not: 1 - polyethylene terephalate (PET); 2 - high density polyethylene (HDPE); 3 - unplasticised polyvinyl chloride (UPVC) or plasticised polyvinyl chloride (PPVC); ...

Phthalate: Phthalates are substances added to plastics to make them more flexible, transparent, or durable. They off-gas into the air and are being phased out in the U.S. and European nations due to health concerns.

2-Propenenitrile - CH2CHCN, a bad smelling, colorless liquid that is used in plastics, and when these plastics are burned they produce fumes that are carcinogenic because of the 2-propenenitrile.

A member of the styrene family of plastics. PS is easy to mould and is used to make refrigerator and washing machine components. It can be foamed to make single use packaging, such as cups, meat and produce trays

Calender: A machine equipped with two or more metal rolls revolving in opposite directions and used for continuously sheeting or plying up rubber and plastics compounds and for frictioning or coating materials with rubber and plastics compounds.

Plastic recycling - there are seven different categories of plastics that can be recycled. See our plastic types chart here.
Post consumer waste - waste collected after the consumer has used and disposed of it.
