Prescriptive
Water rights which are acquired by diverting water and putting it to use in accordance with specified procedures; e.g., filing a request with a state agency to use unused water in a stream, river, or lake..


Land use or water rights which are acquired by occupying land for established time periods or diverting water and putting it to use in accordance with specified procedures.

Thorough system, but less prescriptive than FSC. Historically close to the forest industry.

Anticipatory scenarios (also known as or normative scenarios) start with a prescribed vision of the future (either optimistic, pessimistic or neutral) and then work backwards in time to visualise how this future could emerge.

In a prescriptive (ethical or normative) discounting approach the discount rate is fixed from a social perspective, eg based on an ethical judgement about the interests of future generations (social discount rate).
