Reference Dose (RfD)
The concentration of a chemical known to cause health problems; also be referred to as the ADI, or acceptable daily intake.

Reference Dose (RfD): The RfD is a numerical estimate of a daily oral exposure to the human population, including sensitive subgroups such as children, that is not likely to cause harmful effects during a lifetime.

Reference dose (RfD)-An exposure level defined by the Environmental Protection Agency as "a numerical estimate of a daily oral exposure to the human population, including sensitive subgroups such as children, ...

Reference dose (RfD)
An EPA estimate, with uncertainty or safety factors built in, of the daily lifetime dose of a substance that is unlikely to cause harm in humans.

Reference Dose (RfD): An estimate delivered by the U.S. EPA (with uncertainty spanning perhaps an order of magnitude) of the daily exposure to the human population, ...

RfD (Reference dose). The daily exposure level which, during an entire lifetime of a human, appears to be without appreciable risk on the basis of all facts known at the time. Same as ADI.

Reference Dose (RfD)
The particular concentration of a chemical that is known to cause health problems. A standard that also may be referred to as the acceptable daily intake.

Uncertainty Factor: One of several factors used in calculating the reference dose from experimental data.

Value, such as concentration in air or water, that is derived after appropriate allocation of the reference dose among the possible media of exposure to assist regulatory authorities in establishing permissible levels of a potential toxicant.

critical end-point
Toxic effect used by the USEPA as the basis for a reference dose.
critical group
Part of a target population most in need of protection because it is most susceptible to a given toxicant.

The ratio of a single substance exposure level over a specified time period to a reference dose for that substance derived from a similar exposure period. Indicates the hazard or risk from exposure to that substance.
