Representative sample

Representative Sample
A portion of material or water that is as nearly identical in content and consistency as possible to that in the larger body of material or water being sampled.

Representative Sample: A sample of two sprinkler heads per floor or individual riser, in any case not less than four, or one percent of the number of sprinkler heads per system, whichever is greater.

A representative sample created by the homogenization of multiple samples from multiple sampling locations within the same general area. A composite sample is generally taken to indicate the average concentration in a particle media.

To take representative samples from beverage containers, the many aluminium-based alloys all melt into the same liquid phase, but the various copolymer blends of PET from different manufacturers do not dissolve into one another when heated.

A circular hole made in the ground by an auger or mechanical drill rig to collect soil samples deep in the ground. Representative samples are collected for testing to see if the subsoil has been contaminated.
