riparian rights A doctrine of state water law under which a land owner is entitled to use the water on or bordering his property, including the right to prevent diversion or misuse of upstream water.

Groundwater law: The common law doctrine of riparian rights and the doctrine of prior appropriation as applied to ground water.

overlying right
The name of a ground-water right in a riparian rights state where the surface owner also owns the underlying water in fee simple.
