Where sufficient land and space are available, water may be treated in slow sand filters. These rely on biological treatment processes for their action rather than physical filtration.

The process which remove pollutants not adequately removed by secondary treatment, particularly nitrogen and phosphorus; accomplished by means of sand filters, microstraining, or other methods. Similar to tertiary treatment.

The filtration medium consists of a multiple layer of sand with a variety in size and specific gravity. Sand filters can be supplied in different sizes and materials both hand operated and fully automatically.
