Signal transduction pathway: The course by which a signal from outside a cell is converted to a functional change within the cell.

signal transduction
Molecular pathways through which a cell senses changes in its external or internal environment and changes its pattern of gene expression or enzyme activity in response.
After [9] ...

Signal: The volume or product-level change produced by a leak in a tank.
Signal Words: The words used on a pesticide label -- Danger, Warning, Caution -- to indicate level of toxicity.

Signal Word: warning required by the Federal Hazardous Substances Act of 1960 to be used on the label of a hazardous substance. Examples include DANGER, WARNING, CAUTION, and POISON.

P price signal
Definition (english only)
A message sent to customers in the form of a price charged for a commodity; usually indicates a message intended to produce a particular result.

climate signal A statistically significant difference between the control and disturbed (see climate sensitivity) simulations of a climate model.

to respond to a signal or to reach a desired level.
timer. A device for automatically starting or stopping a
machine or other device at a given time.

Noise: Any unwanted signal; a disturbance that is not part of signal from a specified source.

Pheromones Chemicals released, usually in minute amounts, by one animal, that are detected by, and act as a signal to other members of the same species.

Carbon monoxide (CO), which is primarily emitted from combustion process, particularly from petrol vehicle exhausts due to incomplete combustion; the highest concentrations are generally found at roadside locations - more at signal light junctions.

The main environmental signal which triggers the onset of dormancy is daylength. For most temperate woody plants, long days promote vegetative growth and short days trigger dormancy.

compressed video A digital transmission process used to transmit a video signal.

During a psychogenic sexual experience, signals from the brain are sent to spinal levels T10-L2 and in case of men, are then relayed to the penis where they trigger an erection.

To comply with the regulation, automakers will be required to attach tiny sensors to each wheel that will signal if a tire falls 25 percent below its recommended PSI rating.

The receiver includes a telescope that gathers the transmitted light and converts it to an electrical signal.

Lower Detection Limit: The smallest signal above background noise an instrument can reliably detect.
Lower Explosive Limit (LEL): The concentration of a compound in air below which the mixture will not catch on fire.

The light photons can be measured with a photo-multiplier tube which will multiply the events to produce an electrical signal or pulse. The pulse can be counted to give an indication of the magnitude of the incoming radiation.

A material or device that is sensitive to radiation and can produce a signal suitable for measurement or analysis. A radiation detection instrument.
Disintegration
See decay, radioactive.

Nonattainment Transitional: A subcategory of the nonattainment designation category for state standards that signals progress and implies the area is nearing attainment.

Indicator tests: Tests for a specific contaminant, group of contaminants, or constituent which signals the presence of something else (ex., coliforms indicate the presence of pathogenic bacteria).

Detector: A material or device that is sensitive to radiation and can produce a response signal suitable for measurement or analysis. A radiation detection instrument.
Detonate: To set off in a burst of activity.

Biosensor- Analytical device comprising a biological recognition element (e.g. enzyme, receptor, DNA, antibody, or microorganism) in intimate contact with an electrochemical, optical, thermal, or acoustic signal transducer that together permit ...

Receptor: Group of molecules on the surface or within a cell that deliver a signal to the cell upon stimulation.

1) Under ideal conditions, that concentration of analyte which produces an output signal twice the root mean square of the background noise. 2) Three times the standard deviation obtained for the analysis of a standard solution (each analyte in ...

Tests for a specific contaminant, group of contaminants, or constituent which signals the presence of something else.
Indirect discharge ...

A direct push system used to measure lithology based on soil penetration resistance. Sensors in the tip of the cone of the DP rod measure tip resistance and side-wall friction, transmitting electrical signals to digital processing equipment on the ...

Analytical device comprising a biological recognition element (e.g., enzyme, DNA) in intimate contact with an electrochemical, optical, thermal, or acoustic signal transducer that together permit analyses of chemical properties or quantities.

time lag. The time required for processes and control systems to respond to a signal or to reach a desired level.
timer. A device for automatically starting or stopping a machine or other device at a given time.
