Environment TableTailpipe standards

Tailings: Residue of raw material or waste separated out during the processing of crops or mineral ores.
Tailpipe Standards: Emissions limitations applicable to mobile source engine exhausts.

Tailings or Mine Tailings
Crushed waste rock deposited on the ground during mining and ore processing, including some of the rock in which the ore is found. Unless they are handled carefully, they frequently release contaminants.

Mine Tailings: Portions of washed or milled ore which are too poor for further treatment.
Mineralization: The release of inorganic chemicals from organic matter in the process of aerobic or anaerobic decay.

Mill tailings or any waste that contains commercial asbestos and is generated by a source covered by the Clean Air Act Asbestos NESHAPS.

Uranium Mill Tailings Piles
Former uranium ore processing sites that contain leftover radioactive materials (wastes), including radium and un-recovered uranium.

emission = the release of a substance to the environment, whether in pure form or in other matter, and whether in solid, liquid or gaseous form; includes from landfill, sewage treatment plant and tailings dam, ...

Because water is impounded on a "permanent" basis, the design of these dams is more complex than for tailings or flood control detention dams.

Asbestos-Containing Waste Materials (ACWM): Mill tailings or any waste that contains commercial asbestos and is generated by a source covered by the Clean Air Act Asbestos NESHAPS.

Residues from water treatment, contaminated equipment from oil drilling and tailings from metal processing all create radioactive byproducts. Radioactive waste must be handled and stored safely or it can cause serious harm to living organisms.
