Tonnage: The amount of waste that a landfill accepts, usually expressed in tons per month. The rate at which a landfill accepts waste is limited by the landfill's permit.

DIVERSION CREDITS A financial incentive provided to municipalities or private recycling operations based on the tonnage diverted from the waste stream.

Credits are given based on how much recycling tonnage goes down. The point being, to reduce the amount of waste sources to begin with to lessen overall amount of waste matter that needs to be disposed, reused or recycled.
