vortex : A revolving mass of water which forms a whirlpool. This whirlpool is caused by water flowing out of a small opening in the bottom of a basin or reservoir. A funnelshaped opening is created downward from the water surface.

This is a phenomenon that occurs during the polar winter in which stratospheric air moves in a circular motion, with an area of relatively still air in its centre.

Antarctic Vortex - the combination of a drastic temperature and corresponding pressure drop along with the rotation of the Earth on its axis produces a spinning/rotating volume of air.

Polar Vortex A distinct column of cold air contained over the poles (esp. South) by meterological effects. Develops during the polar winter when the polar regions are in polar night (sunlight does not reach the poles).

Dust devil:a spinning vortex of sand and dust that is usually harmless but may grow quite large. Also called a whirlwind. Dust storm:a large cloud of dust blown by a strong wind.
