Many environmental and cost considerations affect the location and design of water purification plants. Groundwater is cheaper to treat, but aquifers usually have limited output and can take thousands of years to recharge.

 


Orange County Water District's former wastewater purification plant. The last component of WF 21 was demolished in 2007 to make room for the advanced purification facility, the Groundwater Replenishment System, which went on-line in January 2008.
