Who Were the Alchemists?

It has been estimated that in the past 2000 years over 100,000 tomes have been written on Western Alchemy (1).

The alchemists were went to symbolize their metals by means of a tree, to indicate that all seven were branches dependent upon the single trunk of solar life.

Alchemists (see Alchemy) applied the word anima to all "spirits" considered to be female: Anima Mercury, Anima Mundi, and so on.

Alchemists assert the famous Tabula Smaragdina, the Emerald Table of Hermes, to be the chief exposition concerning their alchemical operation by which they achieve the Great Work of the Sun.

Alchemists were sometimes visited in their laboratories by mysterious strangers, who delivered learned discourses concerning the secret processes of the Hermetic arts and, after disclosing certain processes, departed, leaving no trace.

The alchemist saw the essence of his art in separation and analysis on the one hand, and synthesis and consolidation on the other.

We must remember that not all Alchemists had had as much integrity as Lull or Flamel.

Of course, the entire spiritual "enterprise" is based on the Western Hermetic/Gnostic tradition, from Corpus Hermeticum to alchemists's "opera".

The name "astral" is not of our choosing; we have inherited it from the medieval alchemists.

Elsewhere a fifth element sometime transcends, unites, or gives birth to the usual four "Hindu aether" or the "alchemist's quintessence" in China all five Elements rank equal.

This is the Great Work spoken of by the alchemists and adopted by the Rosicrucian tradition. The rules of the Great Work can be discovered and can be known. Then, they have to be applied in our lives.

Supposedly, the Magickal stone, or esoteric key, which would allow Alchemists to turn base metals into gold.

It's possible that alchemists, ceremonial magicians and perhaps even a few witches were able to make individual candles with natural pigments from plants, but they would only have been able to color the wax to the warmer shades of the color spectrum.
