Athame Also known as ritual knifes, athames are black-hilted knifes carried by witches. Supposedly having magical properties of its own, it always had a black handle and often bore magic symbols on the blade.

Note the use of the term "artanus" or "arthany" (compare with modern term "athame") for one of the ritual implements. The Latin and Italian manuscripts attest this as artavus, and French manuscripts as artave.
