Brahman, in Hinduism, means the Supreme Realty conceived of one and undifferentiated, static and dynamic, yet above all definitions; the ultimate principle which underlies the world, the ultimate realty.

 


Brahmanas at once become like those who have conquered their passions, and lower castes become equal to Brihmanas: therefore let all worship those initiate in the Brahma-Mantra, and thus possessed of Divine knowledge (151).

The mystic journey occurs in Taoist, Buddhist, Brahman, Persian, Egyptian, Judaic and Christian traditions (Gardiner 1989). I have been honored to hear the Hawaiian legend of the fire goddess Pele's journey into hell to rescue her kidnapped sister.

The experience in this mode has been called "The One" (Neoplatonism), "Brahman" (Vedanta), "En Soph" (Kabbalah), and "The Eternal" (Blake). We cannot deny this as a phenomenon.

In Hinduism there are three kinds of devas: spiritually superior mortals, those who have achieved enlightenment, and Brahman in the form of a personal God. In Buddhism devas are gods who reside in heaven as a consequence of their good deeds.

He of His own abnormal powers shall realize and make known the world, and the worlds of the devas, with their Maras, their Brahmas, the host of recluses and brahmins, of devas and mankind alike, even as I do now.
