The Elder Futhark is divided into three groups or three "aettir". Runic codes develop from using the rune number within its recognize group, but that can come later.
There are 24 runes of the Elder Futhark and 16 in the Younger Futhark. The mythology for the runes is in the Havamal verses 138 - 139.
