Gnomes
A class of nature spirits linked with the earth. They have many different names in popular lore, and are said to be visible to clairvoyants as dwarfish humans who live in caves and the mountains.

The elementals who dwell in that attenuated body of the earth which is called the terreous ether are grouped together under the general heading of gnomes. (The name is probably derived from the Greek genomus, meaning earth dweller.
