Death Prayer
This term has two different senses.
First, in regard to 'praying for the dead', the death prayer is used either to help the departed soul in the spiritual abode or to request help from such souls on behalf of the living.

Prayer at this level has the weak meaning that we usually attribute to it, a shopping list. But then, we are weak at this level.

The Book of Common Prayer by Thomas Cranmer was first published in 1549 and became the foundational prayer book of the Church of England.

Prayer books, especially Books of Hours, became increasingly available as literacy increased. Indeed, one of the motivations for Church sponsored education was so that the laity could read their prayer books.

Prayer and meditation are two distinct methods of approach to reality. Both are equally legitimate and useful.

PRAYERS THAT CEASE
As to the way and manner of performing this inward prayer, there is one which is of such a nature that no man can be put into it: this is the passive prayer.

Prayer Prayer is an active effort to communicate with a deity or spirit either to offer praise, to make a request, seek guidance, confess sins, or simply to express one's thoughts and emotions.

He denies the idea of the automatic, or mechanical effect of the elixirs, combining the technical and chemical procedures with fasting, prayers and purification. The passages from the 4th chapter of BPZNP are extremely eloquent on this point: ...

So we frequently find in prayers the expression, votiva dona "gifts offered with desire [of receiving grace in return]". Votives have even derived their name from Latin "Votum" which means prayer, wish, desire/vow, promise to God.

These books are wholly Christian in nature, and describe how one may become united with God through prayer and meditation.

They had been praying for protection, and, as happens so often, we don't like the answers we get or don't even recognize them as answers to our prayers.
