This is the divination by fire, which was embodied in the ancient practice of extispicy.

Divining by fire. The presage was good when the flame was vigorous and quickly consumed the sacrifice, but, if in the other hand, if it was slow to consume the victim, the presage was evil.
PYROMANCY and PYROSCOPY are forms of divination by fire or flame, often assisted by substances thrown onto the flames.
Pyromancy, is an experiment of divining by the flaming of the fire; which the ancient Philosophers esteemed of great efficacy.
Divination was widely practiced and authors discuss geomancy, hydromancy, pyromancy, and chiromancy. Divination was considered ignorant and inadvisable rather than evil.
His Office is to teach the Arts of Philosophy, Astrology, Rhetoric, Logic, Cheiromancy, and Pyromancy, in all their parts, and perfectly. He hath under his Power 20 Legions of Spirits. His Seal, or Mark, is thus made, etc.
