Samhain marks the last of the harvest festivals; a time when the the herds of old were culled for the winter's meat.
Samhain is the time of the third and final harvest when, in earlier days, cattle were brought in from summer pastures. Excess livestock was slaughtered and the meat smoked or salted for winter.

The earth grows cold and death roams the land. The spirits of the dead are near, and the veils separating the worlds of the living and the dead are most easily parted.
