Triplicities or Elements
Each of the signs also reflects the qualities of one of the four elements: Fire, Earth, Air and Water. The elements divide the signs into four triplicities of three signs each:

Identification of the Triplicities with the four Elements appears, however, relatively recent: the Twelve-Sign Zodiac existed more than 1,500 years before Aries, Leo and Sagittarius became the Fire Signs.
