Trithemius (1462-1516)
Trithemius was born in Germany, as a magician and alchemist he studied in France, where he Latinized his name. Upon returning to Germany he served as an abbot of a monastery at Spannheim, and later at St. James of Wurzburg.

Many even of our own age exalt Trithemius, others Bacon and Agrippa, for magic and the cabala5 - two things apparently quite distinct - not knowing why they do so.

"The Cryptomenysis and Cryptography of Gustavus Selenus in nine books, to which is added a clear explanation of the System of Steganography of John Trithemius, Abbot of Spanheim and Herbipolis, a man of admirable genius.

Her collection includes Trithemius' Steganographia (Ms. Reg. Lat. 1344) and John Dee's Monas Hieroglyphica (Ms. Reg. Lat. 1266).

They were written in a cipher derived from Trithemius's Polycraphiae, and Westcott soon translated them, making use of the blank versos of Swedenborgian Rite summonses.
