Vaisya is the third of four Hindu social categories, or varna. Traditionally the Vaisyas were traders and businessmen, or peasant farmers.
Originally the system of the four hereditary classes into which Indian population was divided: Brahman, Kshatriya, Vaisya and Shoodra -- (a) descendants of Brahma; (b) warrior; (c) mercantile, and (d) the lowest or agricultural Shoodra class.
