Yule
Winter Solstice
Yule is the Lesser Pagan Sabbat that acknowledges and celebrates the rebirth of the Sun.

Yule may mean "Yoke of the Year," derived from the Anglo-Saxon "Geola," though some suggest a derivation from the Norse "Jul," meaning "wheel.

This is the shortest day of the year (in the Northern Hemisphere), and the first day of Winter. The Sun enters the sign of Capricorn. See Sabbat for more information.

Oak was also the wood of the Yule log, and it would have been very appropriate for the wood burned upon Thor's principal festival to come from his sacred tree.

It is when the Goddess awakes to find that she is pregnant with the Sun God. The rituals for both the summer and winter solstices are designed to help change the course of the sum. The winter solstice has been Christianized as Yule or Christmas.

Yule log ceremonies are okay. Even though they preserve a pagan custom, they can be used by Christians to celebrate the coming of light with the birth of Jesus. Ringing church bells against hail or plague is not against Church law.

And so it is in the very truest and most literal sense A NEWBORN CHRIST that we hail at each approaching Yule-feast, and Christmas is the most vital annual event for all humanity whether we realize it or not.
