Zodiac
Imaginary belt in the celestial sphere, extending about 8° on either side of the ecliptic, the apparent path of the Sun among the stars.
The Zodiac : is an imaginary belt-shaped region in the heavens, 16[deg] broad, or 18[deg] broad, in the middle of which is the ecliptic, or sun's path. It is made up of and divided into 12 constellations or signs for astrological purposes.
The Zodiac and Its Signs

Originally the Zodiacal Signs consisted of Taurus the bull, Cancer the tortoise or crab, Virgo (probably a moon goddess), Scorpio the scorpion, Capricorn the goat-man goat-fish, and Pisces the fisherman.

Interpreting a horoscope involves consideration of planetary positions, house cusps and the angles made by the planets to both (aspects). The signs of the zodiac provide the framework in which the planets interact.
Zodiac Astrology is based, curiously enough, upon illusion, for the zodiac is the imaginary path of the sun through the heavens, as it appears from the standpoint of our planet.

Each single letter represents a different sign of the Zodiac, month, complex direction, ancient Israelite tribe and stone in the breast plate of the High Priest.
It roughly corresponds to the time taken for the vernal equinox to move through one of the twelve constellations of the zodiac.

The point at which the Sun crosses the celestial equator on March 23rd each year seems to be travelling backwards through the Zodiac. This is known as the "Precession of the Equinoxes".
